Celebrating its 29th Anniversary with this event, many have come to love the annual Corn Boil, which this year was held on June 19th and open to all makes, models and years. The Space Coast Street Rods do a great job hosting it, and it always draws a lot of great cars and friendly people. However, this year there was a bit of a change, as it was held at F. Burton Smith Park in Cocoa, instead of the usual Wickham Park location in Melbourne, and as a result the host hotel was also moved. This was because of renovations being done at Wickham, but many thought the relocation offered just as good of a backdrop for the event....and it even had a large pavilion reminiscent of Wickham. The event kicked off on Friday evening at 6:00pm, and included a flame throwing contest, creeper races, giveaways, and free hot dogs and refreshments. On Saturday the pavilion proved to be a great thing because as we all know June is not the coolest month in the Sunshine State, and it was very hot. DJ Fast Eddie Dyer kept the classic tunes filling the air, as everyone mingled and enjoyed the more than 275 vehicles.
As the name implies, there is indeed a corn boil at this show, plus lots of great BBQ meat, beans and beverages, which is included for participants. Ive said it before, and Ill say it again, when you factor in the delicious lunch for two into the pre-registration fee of $25 it makes the Corn Boil a pretty good value for a days worth of fun, and two heaping plate loads of food.
Included in the goody bag was one raffle ticket, and the drawing included a new GM 350 crate motor (won by Glenn Brown), a diamond ring (won by Jim Harding), a small block Chevy aluminum manifold and a 4-barrel carburetor. Plus there are a few specialty awards given out for vehicles in various categories (see the results at the end of the article). For those looking to pick up a few odds and ends there was also a pretty good swap meet and vendor area, with about 30 or so people offering up some new and used parts.
Once again the Space Coast Street Rods pulled together nicely to make for an enjoyable event for everyone in attendance. No matter where they host this one it is certainly worth adding to your show schedule for next year. CN
