Shops at Wiregrass Monthly Open Show • Covered June 13 & July 11, 2009

story and photos by Ron "Dragon" Gentry

The Shops at Wiregrass, located on the corner of SR56 and Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in the town of Wesley Chapel, along with the help of Premium Productions, began hosting open car events on the 2nd Saturday of each month starting in May. Utilizing the main street of their super clean, manicured and spacious mall, the event has been quite a success. The coverage appearing here comes from the June and July events, which as part of their “Summer Series” took place from 4:00-9:00pm to bypass the heat of the day. Judging is accomplished by a highly trained and knowledgeable staff, supplied by Premium Productions of Pinellas Park. This team has experience in judging not only at local level, but at the National level of certification.

The June 13th show saw 182 highly detailed entries park on the Main Street of the mall, with entries coming from not only local cities, but also Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Naples and Gainesville. The participants prepared their entries for showing and judging, and the many spectators could not believe the quality of the vehicles driven to the show. While open to all vehicles, the June show featured Mustangs, and the Mustang Club of Tampa came out in full force to take advantage of the Club Participation Award money and the 17 different Mustang judging classes. Dash plaques and winged victory awards were provided by Dudley’s Trophy Service in Pinellas Park.

Even with the threat of rain all around the show for July, it didn’t dampen the 128 participants that attended the evening get-together. The heavy rain threat did however keep some people at home, as there were 31 paid entries on the pre-registration books that did not attend. Street Rods were the featured class for July, with 17 special categories, featuring a first and second place award in each class. There were 61 classifications available for awards.

With 75 stores and restaurants, The Shops at Wiregrass mall features a myriad of retail stores, food and drink outlets, live entertainment, and plenty of bench seating around the mall streets and bandstand area. The management has created a leisurely evening atmosphere, which when combined with a quality car show and “get up and dance” entertainment makes for a fun time. The event is free to spectators, and only cost $15 for vehicle pre-registration, or $20 the day of the show.

Though it is an evening show during the summer to avoid the heat, during the winter months the hours are shifted to take advantage of the daylight, with registration opening at 9:00am and awards presented at 3:00pm.
