USA Fleamarket Monthly Show • Covered October 11, 2009

story and photos by Charlie Amaral

Phil Desio and his gang put on their 10th event of 2009 on October 11th at the USA Fleamarket venue at State Road 52 and US 19 in Port Richey, FL. Phil’s shows at the USA Fleamarket are held on the second Sunday of each month, and have a popular following of attendees.

What’s great about the location is the various forms of activities that attracts a diverse audience. It reminds me somewhat of the old county fairs that bring back a wave of nostalgia. To begin with, their famous outdoor swap meet features an eclectic collection of vendors and goods ranging from auto parts and tools to the weekend warrior selling household yard sale items, and is a relative bargain to sellers at only $5.00 per space. Next is the humongous indoor fleamarket with hundreds of vendors selling everything from fresh produce to antique firearms. If you’re looking for a particular item it wouldn’t be hard to find given the selection these two venues offer. There’s plenty of free parking, and maneuvering around is easy because the buildings are all co-joined and easy to access. Entertainment for the young folks is also present, with rides and other fun activities. Finally there’s the food that is available from various vendors, which includes seafood dinners, deli sandwiches, plus ethnic delights of Greek, Italian, Polish, Indian, and American cusine. I could go on and on about this subject, yet I saved the best for last. The desserts and bakery goods are out of this world! Now you see why this great place reminds me of the local county fairs I used to attend in my youth.

Weather wise it was a fairly warm day with temperatures in the low 90’s, which was a little uncommon for October, but a little sacrifice for living in paradise. [The cold weather would turn up soon enough come December and January]. Registration for the Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show is a modest $10.00 from 9:00am to 12:30pm, and includes a handsome dash plaque and raffle ticket for door prize eligibility. There were also 50/50 tickets available if you felt lucky. On the awards side the show offers a Top 30, plus Best Of’s and a Best Of Show. Relaxation and socializing amongst the regular participants and newcomers made the heat bearable by enjoying each other’s company, while the 50’s and 60’s tunes in the air helped accentuate the festive atmosphere.
