6th Annual Veterans Celebration Show • 2005
story, photos and captions by John Michael

On Sunday, November 6th, 2005, car show enthusiasts gathered at the Citrus Tower on US Highway 27 in Clermont for the 6th Annual Veterans Celebration Car Show. The event was sponsored by the Korean War Veterans of Lake County Chapter #188, and was held to honor all veterans of all wars and conflicts. Warm weather made the day feel more like summer than fall, and a slight breeze kept it nice. The celebration included a 4-plane fly-over, military vehicle display, along with a traditional Honor Guard and gun salute. But what was so profound was to listen to testimonies of the veterans and their sacrifices. Their stories made me truly appreciate the freedoms that we have, and is a reminder of how lucky we are to be living in the good old USA. Musical entertainment was provided by DJ’s Butch and Jennifer Johnston of WJBJ Cruisin’ With The Classics, and performing live on stage were the “Dukes of Harmony”.

The judged show was open to all vehicles 1979 and older, as well as newer vehicles of Special Interest. Dash plaques were given to the first 100 vehicles registered, and door prizes were given out throughout the day. A 50/50 drawing was also held, with $604 going to the winner, and the other $604 going to the veterans. A four-post Direct-Lift car lift was generously donated by Affordable Automotive Equipment of Orlando for the grand prize give-away, and the runner-up prize was a Yamaha Home Cinema Surround Sound package. The awards were plaques given out to the Top 40 vehicles, and specialty trophies were given for several categories including Best of Show, which also received a $50 cash award as well.

Around 200 vehicles registered for the event, making it another successful year. It was really neat to see so many people bring out their rides in support of our veterans. The Korean War Veterans of Lake County Chapter #188 plans on hosting this annual event again next year, so as information becomes available it will be listed in the Coming Attractions section of Mike Kelly’s Cruise News.
